A common question we hear: can you finance a Japanese import? The short answer is yes — and a properly complied, dealer-sold import is actually easier to finance than a self-imported car. Here is how it works, what lenders look for, and how to get your finance sorted before you find the car.
Why a complied import is financeable
Australian lenders care about one thing above all: the car is registerable and insurable. A properly complied JDM import carries a Used Import Plate (RAV plate), a valid RAV entry, and a state roadworthy — exactly the same paperwork a locally-delivered car needs for finance. From the lender's perspective, a complied import from a licensed dealer is no different to any other used car.
A self-imported car, by contrast, may not have a RAV plate yet, may not have cleared state registration, and may not have a clear valuation — all of which make a lender nervous.
What lenders look for
When you apply for finance on a JDM import, the lender assesses:
- The vehicle — is it complied, registerable, and insurable? We provide all the documentation.
- Your financial position — income, expenses, credit history, and existing commitments. This is the same for any car loan.
- The purchase — a clear sale contract from a licensed motor dealer (LMCT), with a set price.
Because we are a licensed dealer (LMCT 11761), every vehicle we sell comes with a proper sale contract, a roadworthy certificate, and full compliance documentation. That is exactly what a lender needs to approve a loan.
Finance options
There are three common ways to finance a JDM import through us:
Secured car loan
The most common option — a fixed-rate, fixed-term loan where the car is the security. Terms run from 3 to 7 years, and you own the car outright at the end. Available for vehicles up to around 12–15 years old, depending on the lender.
Chattel mortgage
If the vehicle is for business use, a chattel mortgage lets you claim the GST upfront and may offer depreciation benefits. Suited to ABN holders using the car primarily for business.
Personal loan
For older or specialist vehicles that do not qualify for secured finance, an unsecured personal loan is an option — though the interest rate is typically higher.
How to get pre-approved
The smart move is to get finance pre-approved before you settle on a car. That way you know your budget, you can move quickly when the right car comes up, and the dealer (us) can finalise the sale without delay. The process:
- Apply with a lender or broker — we can point you to lenders who understand imports.
- Provide documents — proof of income, ID, and living expenses.
- Receive conditional approval — usually within 24–48 hours.
- Choose your car from our inventory.
- Final approval and settlement — we provide the sale contract and compliance docs; the lender settles and the car is yours.
What about insurance?
Most Australian insurers will cover a complied JDM import without issue — the same companies that insure locally-delivered cars (Shannons, NRMA, RACV, GIO, and others) all insure imports. The key is having the compliance documentation and a roadworthy certificate, which we provide with every sale.
The takeaway
Financing a JDM import is straightforward when you buy from a licensed dealer with full compliance. The same finance you would use on any quality used car applies — the import is not a complication, it is just a different country of origin.
