A Japanese import can be one of the best car purchases you ever make — a clean, low-kilometre, enthusiast-grade vehicle that holds its value. It can also be a costly mistake if the car has a hidden history. Here is exactly what to check, what paperwork to demand, and how to tell a genuine import from a problem.
1. Ask for the auction sheet — always
The single most important document on a JDM import is the Japanese auction inspection sheet (the auct sheet). It is the independent, pre-purchase condition report prepared when the car crossed the block in Japan.
A reputable dealer will hand it over willingly. The sheet shows:
- The auction grade (see our auction grades guide).
- The true odometer reading at time of sale.
- Every exterior and interior mark.
- Any accident flags (grade R or **).
If a seller cannot or will not produce the original auction sheet, walk away. We provide the inspection sheet for every vehicle we retail — it is the foundation of the sale.
2. Verify the kilometres
Japan's strict shaken (roadworthy) inspection system records mileage at each mandatory inspection, typically every two years. This creates a paper trail that makes odometer rollback in Japan very difficult and very illegal.
The odometer reading on a genuine JDM import should line up with the shaken history and the auction sheet. When you buy from us, you receive both — so the kilometres are verified at two independent points.
Beware the "low kms" import with no paperwork
A car advertised with improbably low kilometres and no supporting paperwork is a red flag. Genuine low-kilometre JDM cars exist, and they are common — Japan's short average trip distances mean many cars genuinely cover very few kilometres per year. But the paperwork should prove it.
3. Demand the compliance documentation
Every import sold in Australia must have either a Used Import Plate (RAV plate) fitted by a Registered Automotive Workshop, or — for older vehicles — the appropriate concession documentation. The paperwork that should travel with the car:
- RAV entry — proof the vehicle is on the federal Register of Approved Vehicles.
- Import approval — the Department of Infrastructure's approval to import.
- Compliance certificate — the workshop's sign-off on the ADR modifications.
- Deregistration / export documents from Japan — proof the car was sold legitimately in Japan.
Every one of these lives in the folder that comes with a vehicle we sell. If you are buying elsewhere and any are missing, the car may not be registerable.
4. Check the title is clear
A JDM import should come with clear Japanese deregistration papers showing the car was sold, not stolen. The export documentation from Japan confirms the chain of ownership. This is standard with any legitimate import — ask to see it.
5. Inspect the car in person
Photographs hide a great deal. A genuine importer will encourage an in-person inspection and a test drive. When you arrive, check:
- Panel gaps and paint match — uneven gaps or mismatched paint hint at accident repair.
- Underbody condition — a clean, dry underbody is the sign of a car that has not lived in heavy salt.
- Interior wear versus the odometer — a 40,000 km car should not have a worn-through driver's seat.
- Cold start — start the engine from cold and listen for timing-chain or turbo noises.
We welcome inspections at our Braeside yard. Bring a friend, bring a mechanic, bring a magnet — whatever you need to feel confident.
6. Understand the price
A properly complied, RAV-plated JDM import costs more than a self-imported car because the compliance, the workshop labour, the stamp duty, and the dealer's sourcing expertise are all baked in. That is not a markup to be haggled over — it is the cost of a car that will actually register and drive away the same day.
The cheapest JDM car on the internet is almost always the most expensive one you can buy.
